Gel Cast 101: How To Scrunch Out The Crunch For Soft, Defined Curls

Ever felt that initial stiffness in your curls once they’re dry and you’ve put your favourite styling products in? That’s the tell-tale sign of a gel cast at work. If you’re thinking you’re not a fan of that crunchy, almost shell-like feel, don’t worry. Trust us when we say that initial crispness is your secret weapon to gorgeously soft and defined curls.

Read on to discover everything you need to know about gel casts and how to scrunch out the crunch to achieve voluminous, frizz-free and touchable curls that still boast incredible hold and definition.

What is a gel cast and why is it important?

Products like our Super Hold Styler act as a sculptor for your curls, creating a temporary framework as they dry. This initial firmness, the much-talked-about gel cast, might feel a little unexpected, but it’s truly the secret ingredient for achieving those dreamy frizz-free curls that go the distance.

Don’t fret about that initial crispy feeling – it’s only temporary. We’re going to explain exactly how to scrunch out the crunch and reveal the soft, bouncy magic within.

But first, you’re probably wondering why this seemingly stiff stage, this gel cast, is such a crucial part of your curl journey? Here’s why: it’s a true multitasker, working hard behind the scenes to give you the best possible results.

Benefits of a gel cast

  • Locks in curl definition: when your hair is wet and its natural pattern is most susceptible to disruption, the Super Hold Styler forms a delicate yet powerful layer around each curl. This helps your strands dry in their intended shape, leading to beautifully defined coils and waves.

  • Acts as a frizz barrier: that initial hold creates a protective shield around each curl, preventing those frustrating flyaways and unwanted frizz from forming as your hair dries.

  • Enhances curl longevity: by setting your curl pattern so effectively during the drying process, the gel cast ensures that your definition lasts for days. This means less time spent re-styling and more time enjoying your gorgeous, defined hair.

How to scrunch out the crunch: step-by-step guide

Let’s break down how to go from that initial, rigid hold to soft, touchable perfection. We’re going to explain exactly how to scrunch out the crunch, or SOTC as it’s affectionately known in the curl world.

Before you start, prep your curls as usual: after washing, add your leave-in conditioner to wet hair and work it through your curls (we couldn’t live without our Curl Cream, which not only smells divine but also offers unrivalled moisture for nourished and perfectly defined curls). Remember, if you skip this step or only use a gel, you can end up with brittle, dry curls.

While your hair is still soaking wet, apply your styling product. Our Curl Defining Gel is great for medium hold, or go for the Super Hold Styler if you want curls that stay in check even on the busiest of days. Rake through section by section, working the product through all the strands of your hair. We’ve got an awesome guide on how to style curly hair. OK now you’re ready to SOTC!

  1. The golden rule — your hair must be completely dry

This is the most crucial step in learning how to scrunch out the crunch. Resist the urge to start scrunching when your hair is even slightly damp.

Why? Because if you do, you’ll disrupt that delicate gel cast before it’s had a chance to fully do its job. This can lead to frizz and a loss of definition, exactly what we’re trying to avoid. So, be patient.

Let your hair air dry completely or use a diffuser on a low heat setting until every single strand feels dry to the touch. This means we can be 100% sure the gel cast has fully set your curls. A top tip: hover the diffuser around your hand to avoid it touching your curls and breaking the cast. For more on how to dry curly hair, check out this blog: How To Dry Curly Hair.

  1. Add a touch of lightweight oil or serum (optional)

Once your hair is bone dry and you can feel that satisfying crunch from the gel cast, it’s time to start scrunching. Some like to add a lightweight oil or serum to their hands before they start, which can work wonders to break the gel cast without causing frizz.

Our Revive 5 hair Oil is a weightless hair oil that protects against heat and UV rays, packed with nourishing ingredients like moringa oil, mongongo oil and daikon seed oil for glossy and bouncy curls.

Remember, less is more here – we don’t want to weigh down those gorgeous curls after the gel cast has done its work.

  1. It’s time to master the art of the scrunch

Now for the fun part of learning how to scrunch out the crunch. Gently cup sections of your crunchy curls in your palms and squeeze upwards towards your scalp.

Work your way around your entire head, focusing on the areas that feel the most firm from the gel cast. You’ll start to feel that initial gel cast breaking, revealing the soft, defined curls underneath. You can also separate bigger curl clumps for added volume.

  1. Fluff and shake for added volume

Want to take your curls to the next level after you scrunch out the crunch? Once you’ve released most of the hold from the gel cast, use your fingertips to gently lift and loosen the roots. This helps to create volume without disrupting the definition that the gel cast provided.

You can also flip your head upside down and give it a gentle shake to encourage even more lift. Repeat throughout the day to boost hair volume for flat roots.

Three things to avoid when scrunching out the crunch

Here are a few common mistakes we’ve seen:

  1. Scrunching too soon: we’ve already covered this, but it’s worth repeating. Patience is your best friend when waiting for that gel cast to fully form, so don’t rush this step. Wait until your hair is fully dry before you start.

  2. Using too much oil or serum: overdoing it with hair oils or serums can lead to heavy, greasy-looking curls after you scrunch out the crunch. Start with a tiny amount and add more if needed.

  3. Over-manipulating your curls: too much touching and fussing can lead to frizz after you’ve broken the gel cast. Be gentle and let the scrunching process do its thing.

Alternative methods to soften a gel cast

While the scrunch method is a classic for a reason when it comes to breaking the gel cast, here are a few other ways to soften that crunchy feeling.

Microfibre towel or T-shirt scrunching

Instead of using your hands to scrunch out the crunch, try gently scrunching your dry, crunchy curls with a soft microfibre towel, which is less likely to cause frizz than a traditional terry cloth towel.

Diffuser on low heat

If you’re using a diffuser to dry your hair and form that gel cast, you can also use it on a low heat setting to gently warm up the gel cast, which can help to soften it.

The hands-free approach

For those who prefer a more low-maintenance routine, you can simply let the gel cast soften naturally throughout the day as you move. This might take a little longer, but it’s a great option if you want to save precious time (and you don’t mind the crunchy look for a short while).
